The terrorist and political organization Hezbollah (backed up by Iran) with base in Lebanon and strong arms in Syria, started an exchange of fire across the border with Israel. This Sunday, several rockets were fired to Israel from Lebanon right after last week’s event when an Israeli Drone was shot down over Beirut. What is next?
WHAT HAPPENED?
Israel deployed several Drones over Beirut in a “multi-scenario” operation that included strikes over Iran, Syria, and Iraq during the last 3 weeks. Why is Israel doing this? The tension between Iran and the United States is increasing the work of Iran’s main ally in the region, Hezbollah, in Syria and Lebanon. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, said in a televised speech to his followers in Lebanon right after the Drone incident: “This is no longer a red line, I tell the Israelis, we no longer have red lines because you changed the rules of engagement.” According to the words of the supreme leader of the group … anything can happen now. Israel is worried as intelligence already warned the White House and the UK about big “large-scale military bases” of Iran being updated in Syria and “Long-Range Missile platforms deployed in Lebanon”.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Israel is going to elections in less than 2 weeks and the power of Netanyahu will be put in question. Can a change in leadership modify the current scenario with the PA, Iran, and Lebanon? Very difficult. If tension increases, it is very likely that Israel might lean towards Netanyahu’s experience more than to a “coalition” government.
Apart from elections, the role of Iran in the Middle East is very different than years ago. Technology and funding are the key areas of Rouhani and the arms of Tehran are spread from Syria and Lebanon into Yemen, the West Bank and Gaza. Can Israel or the United States control a “multi-scenario” of war as predicted?
