One of the biggest questions inside the scientific community is about the next magnetic pole reversal. This event will have catastrophic consequences to the Earth and the population. According to recent studies, this might happened in a long term process and not sudden like many still believe. Even if there is a minor “tilt” on the axis of the Earth, the effects will have a deep impact in our lives. Is this event overdue?

HOW DOES THIS WORK ?

1 –The Earth’s magnetic field is thought to be generated by fluid motions in the liquid, outer part of the Earth’s core, which is mainly composed of iron. The fluid motions are driven by buoyancy forces that develop at the base of the outer core as the Earth slowly cools and iron condenses onto the solid, inner solid core below.(Scientific American)

2 –The rotation of the Earth causes the buoyant fluid to rise in curved trajectories, which generate new magnetic field by twisting and shearing the existing magnetic field. Over 99 percent of the Earth’s magnetic energy remains confined entirely within the core. (Scientific American)

3 – By magnetic reversal, or ‘flip’, we mean the process by which the North pole is transformed into a South pole and the South pole becomes a North pole. Interestingly, the magnetic field may sometimes only undergo an ‘excursion’, rather than a reversal. (geomag.bgs.ac.uk)

EARTH ‘S POLE REVERSAL NEW FINDINGS

Scientists believe that the last event of this kind happened approximately 780,000 years ago. Not the first time as this situation might have affected the Earth multiple times as it is a “normal” process for the planet. The Earth’s axis is tilted in an angle of 23.5 degrees relative to our orbital plane and this can change sooner than later. But the question is how long this process takes.

New studies are concentrating their efforts around research on ancient lava flow as this is a phenomenon that works as a “scar” over the surface of the Earth, explaining what happened before. Apparently, according to volcanic research: The magnetic field reversal took much longer than thought.

This group of scientists (University of Madison according to Space.com) understand that the process lasted approximately 22,000 years and not 1,000 to 10,000 years. This is very important information. The idea of 1,000 years or even 2,000 years is still there and it creates more worries among the scientific community: It is almost a sudden change.

IS THIS A CONCLUSION? NO

This research shows data according to one fact and also this “reversal” happened multiple times and all of them might had a different behaviour. Conclusive thoughts on this are not effective and can be misleading. It is important that we have more information regarding previous events but this type of projects need more funding, more people involved and education.

OTHER POINTS OF VIEW

Many scientists and independent researchers still believe that we are “overdue” for a pole shift as this happened almost every 200,000/300,000 years and last time recorded was 780,000 as we mentioned before. Many options are still possible:

1 – We are already going through a pole reversal and the effects are slow and the process is slower than we thought.

2 – The last pole shift did not happened 780,000 years ago but maybe … 100,000 years ago? This would make most of the theories about civilisation… a little bit different.

3 – Pole shift will happen all of a sudden in the course of hours or days and there is no way to forecast or prepare for an event of this kind.

There is definitely a lot more to understand about this phenomenon and how we can prepare for an event like this. Geological aspects like volcanos, earthquakes and magma movement as other events like solar activity are being monitored closer and better than before. Maybe by funding this research and opening the data archives to more scientists will help to understand what are we waiting for.
